Consultation

Mental health consultation is a confidential discussion intended to provide guidance, clinical perspective, supportive advocacy, individualized treatment recommendations, and/or appropriate referrals.  The primary purpose of consultation, as distinguished from psychotherapy and an established therapeutic relationship, is to objectively address a request within a brief period of time in order to provide information and identify pathways toward meaningful resolution.  This conversation also may include co-parenting support, identification of therapeutic and educational options for a third party, or perhaps preparation for a challenging meeting or formal hearing. Psychoeducational materials and qualified literature are often provided.

Additional consulting arrangements may involve communicating with a current client’s healthcare provider, family member, custodial or legal representative, or authorized third party. Documentation of professional opinions also may be offered in which suggestions are outlined specifying appropriate therapeutic modalities, interventions, coping strategies, and lifestyle changes aimed at improving mental well-being.
